Today a bit of history. We visited the District Six. It was a vibrant centre with close links to the city and the port. By the beginning of the twentieth century, it was a lively cosmopolitan community made up of coloured residents: former slaves, artisans, merchants and other immigrants, including Malay people brought by the Dutch East India Company. In 1966, the apartheid regime declared District Six a whites-only area. By 1982, more than 60000 people had been relocated 25 km away.
