As South Africa is well-known for its wine, we decided to visit Franschhoek, a small town in the Western Cape province. The valley was settled 300 years ago by French Huguenot refugees, who were fleeing religious persecution in Europe. They were granted a piece of land by the Dutch East India Company to develop the art of growing wine. They imported with them a great kitchen. Franschhoek is now the country’s “gastronomic capital” with world class restaurants.
